The girls, aged between 14 and 19, are part of a representative team called “The Americas Team” made up of talents from various American high schools.

To understand what this is all about, we interviewed some of the key figures of this experience. Here are their words:

The Words of Coaches Michael-James Trujillo and Joshua Nicholas

I: “Where do you come from, what is the name of the team, and why was it formed?”
C: The team is called “The Americas Team,” and the idea is to give some young American girls the opportunity to play the sport they love and visit the world at the same time.
The girls come from about 15 different states in America, including Oregon, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Ohio, and Pennsylvania.

I: “Is this the first time you are coming to Italy for this kind of experience?”

C: This is the first time we are here in Italy, but it’s not our first intercontinental experience: in the past, we have been to Australia and last year to Barcelona.

I: “Have you noticed any differences between the Italian and American playing styles? What are they?”

C: Yes, there are some differences: European basketball is more finesse and free flowing compared to American basketball.

Here in Italy, the game is structured around the team, and it’s a much more selfless game.

On the other hand, American basketball is a bit more individualistic; we try to play 1vs1, push the limits, and take control of the action.

I: “What do you expect from this experience, and what are your goals?”

C: We have discussed for a long time about what our goal is, for these days: we are unlikely to return here soon, so the purpose is just to enjoy the experience to the fullest and try as many things as possible, even if not everything goes perfectly.

I expect a lot of fun and that these girls can have an amazing experience… a memory they can cherish for the rest of their lives.

I: “Winning matters?”

C: Winning is important, it’s something we want to achieve…

We all want to win in life!

But even more important is the memory being created these days.

Words from Our President Stefano Minora

“This is the first year we are organizing this event in collaboration with the agency ‘Effetto Italy.’ We host, in two different weeks, in June and then in July, a group of about 70 people, including girls and parents, who wish to combine a cultural visit to our Italy with a sports experience, aiming to meet and interact with young athletes of the same age.
We are very happy to have the opportunity to give our athletes this experience, which will enrich them not only from a sports point of view but also through a cultural exchange with girls from the homeland of sport, America.”
